Thermostat Not Working? How to Find the Problem by Elimination
When the thermostat is calling and nothing happens, people blame the thermostat first. Often it's the 24-volt control circuit behind it. The fastest way to find it is to take the thermostat out of the equation.

What you're seeing
- The thermostat screen is blank or keeps rebooting.
- The thermostat shows cooling or heating but nothing turns on.
- The system works sometimes and drops out other times.
- A board LED is off or showing a fault code at the furnace or air handler.
How to track it down
Work through these in order, or follow along in the video above. Each step rules something out before you spend money on parts.
Check the easy stuff
Power switch at the furnace or air handler, breaker, door switch, and thermostat batteries if it uses them. Also check the condensate float switch. A full drain pan opens the control circuit and shuts the system down on purpose.
Confirm 24 volts
Measure between R and C at the equipment. No voltage points to the transformer, a blown low-voltage fuse on the board, or a safety switch that's open.
Take the thermostat out of the equation
At the equipment, jumper R to G for the fan, R to Y for cooling, or R to W for heat. If the system runs, the equipment is fine and the problem is the thermostat or the wire.
Check the thermostat wire
Look for a nicked or shorted wire, especially where it runs outside to the condenser. A shorted wire will keep blowing the board fuse.
Replace the right part
Only after the circuit checks out do you replace the thermostat. Match it to the system type, especially heat pumps, and make sure it has a C wire if it needs one.
If you're a homeowner
Checking breakers, switches, batteries, and whether the drain pan is full is safe for anyone. Jumpering terminals and replacing fuses is tech territory. If the board fuse keeps blowing, there's a short somewhere, and a new fuse won't fix it.
